Questions and Answers About Mistletoe

What is mistletoe?
Mistletoe is a semiparasitic plant that grows on several types of trees, including apple, oak, maple, elm, pine, and birch. It has been used for centuries to treat medical conditions such as epilepsy, hypertension, headaches, menopausal symptoms, infertility, arthritis, and rheumatism.

Mistletoe is one of the most widely studied complementary and alternative medicine therapies for cancer. In certain European countries, products made from European mistletoe are among the most prescribed therapies for cancer patients. These products are made and sold under brand names including:

Iscador (also called Iscar).
Eurixor.
Helixor.
Isorel (also called Vysorel).
Iscucin.
Lektinol (also called Plenosol).
ABNOBAviscum.
This summary discusses research done mainly with this mistletoe species.

The chemical makeup of mistletoe products varies, depending on many factors, including:

The type of host tree on which the mistletoe plant grows.
The time of year the plant is harvested.
The species of mistletoe.
Whether the extract is fermented or unfermented.
Whether the extract is prepared with homeopathic methods.
The company that makes the product.
Mistletoe extracts are prepared as water-based solutions or solutions of water and alcohol. Mistletoe products may be named according to the type of host tree on which the plant grows. For example, IscadorM is from apple trees, IscadorP comes from pine trees, IscadorQ is from oak trees, and IscadorU comes from elm trees. Some users believe that the type of mistletoe extract chosen should depend on the type of tumor and the sex of the patient.

What is the history of the discovery and use of mistletoe as a complementary or alternative treatment for cancer?
Mistletoe was used by the Druids and the ancient Greeks, and appears in legend and folklore as a panacea or "cure -all". Modern interest in mistletoe as a possible treatment for cancer began in the 1920s.

Extracts of mistletoe have been shown to kill cancer cells in the laboratory and to boost the immune system (the complex group of organs and cells that defends the body against infection or disease). For this reason, mistletoe has been classified as a type of biological response modifier (a substance that stimulates the body's response to infection and disease). Extracts of mistletoe have also been shown in the laboratory to prevent the growth of new blood vessels needed for tumors to grow.

Ingredients in mistletoe that have been studied for their usefulness in treating cancer include:

Alkaloids.
Viscotoxins.
Lectins.
What is the theory behind the claim that mistletoe is useful in treating cancer?
Mistletoe extract is studied as a possible anticancer agent because it has been shown to:

Have effects on the immune system.
Kill mouse, rat, and human cancer cells in the laboratory.
Protect the DNA in white blood cells in the laboratory, including cells that have been exposed to DNA-damaging chemotherapy drugs.
There is no evidence that mistletoe's effects on the immune system help the body fight cancer.

See the PDQ health professional summary on Mistletoe Extracts for more information on theory.

How is mistletoe administered?
Mistletoe extracts are usually given by injection under the skin (subcutaneous). Less common ways to give mistletoe include by mouth, into a vein (intravenous or IV), into the pleural cavity, or into the tumor. In most reported studies, injections under the skin were given 2 to 3 times a week for various lengths of time.

What preclinical (laboratory or animal) studies have been conducted using mistletoe?
Many laboratory and animal studies have been done with mistletoe, either alone or combined with other agents. Laboratory studies have suggested that mistletoe may support the immune system by increasing the number and activity of various types of white blood cells. One type of European mistletoe (IscadorQu) used in a 2004 laboratory study showed a strong anticancer effect on certain types of cancer cells but no anticancer effect on other types of cancer cells. While one laboratory study reported that mistletoe extract caused several types of human cancer cells to grow faster, this was not found in other recent lab studies.

Studies testing mistletoe's ability to stop cancer cell growth in animals have yielded mixed and inconsistent results, depending on the extract used, the dose tested, the way it was given, and the type of cancer studied. Results of a few animal studies have suggested that mistletoe may be useful in decreasing the side effects of standard anticancer therapy, such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy, and that it counteracts the effects of drugs used to suppress the immune system, such as cortisone.

Have any clinical trials (research studies with people) been conducted using mistletoe?
Most clinical trials using mistletoe to treat cancer have been done in Europe. Most study results have been published in German. Although many of these trials have reported mistletoe to be effective, there are major weaknesses in almost all that raise doubts about their findings. Weaknesses have included small numbers of patients, incomplete patient data, lack of information about mistletoe dose, and problems with study design.

Many studies involve using mistletoe as adjuvant therapy in patients with cancer. One retrospective cohort study done between 1993 and 2000 looked at the use of a mistletoe extract (Iscador) as long-term adjuvant therapy in 800 patients treated with chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy for colorectal cancer that had not spread. The study found that patients treated with Iscador had fewer adverse events, better symptom relief, and improved disease-free survival compared to patients who did not receive Iscador as adjuvant therapy.

In 2002, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), in cooperation with the National Cancer Institute (NCI), began enrolling patients for a phase I clinical trial of a mistletoe extract (Helixor A) and gemcitabine in patients with advanced solid tumors. The trial is now closed and the data is being analyzed.

Before researchers can conduct clinical drug research in the United States, they must file an Investigational New Drug (IND) application with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA does not make information public about IND applications or approvals; this information can be made public only by the applicants. At present, at least two U.S. investigators have IND approval to study mistletoe as a treatment for cancer.

The National Cancer Institute's PDQ clinical trials database contains protocol abstracts for clinical studies of mistletoe as a treatment for cancer.

Have any side effects or risks been reported from mistletoe?
Very few bad side effects have been reported from the use of mistletoe extract products. Common side effects include soreness and inflammation at injection sites, headache, fever, and chills. A few cases of severe allergic reactions, including anaphylactic shock, have been reported.

Although mistletoe extracts appear to be safe, mistletoe plants and berries are toxic (poisonous) to humans. Side effects caused by eating mistletoe plants and berries include seizures, slowing of the heart rate, abnormal blood pressure, vomiting, and death. These toxic effects may be more or less severe depending on the amount and the type of mistletoe plant eaten.

Is mistletoe approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use as a cancer treatment in the United States?
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved the use of mistletoe as a treatment for cancer or any other medical condition. The FDA does not allow injectable mistletoe extracts to be imported or used except for clinical research.

At this time, there is not enough evidence to recommend the use of mistletoe as a treatment for cancer except in carefully designed clinical trials. These trials will give more information about whether mistletoe can be useful in treating certain types of cancer

Intrduction to Cancer, How does Cancer Spread, Types and Causes of Cancer

How Does Cancer Spread?`

The cells of malignant nodule have the capacity to attack the adjacent tissues and organs. The cancerous cell may also affect some other organs in case it breaks away from the growth. The broken cancerous link will travel with the bloodstream and target some other organ. The process of spread of cancer is called metastasis. The cancer which has floated to others parts of the body will be always referred to the origin or the part from where it sprung. Like cervical cancer has a capacity to affect lungs and in case it did then the cancer in lungs will not be called lungs cancer. It will be always proclaimed as cervical cancer. The cancer only affects those organs that produce blood and the neighboring tissues.

Types of Cancer

As we have briefed earlier that there are more than 100 types of cancer while each is different from the rest in symptoms, causes and treatment. Here we have given you a broader category of grouping various types of cancer. Cancer types can be grouped into broader categories. Mainly they include:

    • Carcinoma: It is the cancer that triggers in the skin or in those tissues that cover or line organs.
    • Sarcoma: Bone, fat, cartilage, blood vessels, muscle, or other connective or/and supportive tissues are the origin of this type of cancer.
    • Leukemia: The cancer of the blood is called leukemia. It exists in those tissues that produce blood cells like bone marrow. A disorder in the bone marrows gives off abnormal white blood cells that refrain from dying when unnecessary. The number of older cells blocks or disturbs the passage of the blood. They cancerous cells often travel with the blood.
    • Lymphoma and Myeloma: It is the cancers that starts in the cells of immune system. Immune system is the body’s natural defense system that helps in fighting with viruses, infections and all types of diseases.
    • Central nervous system cancers: It is that type of cancer which starts its passage in the tissues of the brain and spinal cord.

    Causes of Cancer

There are many types of cancer and so does the symptoms of each of them. Fatigue, weight loss and fever are commonly observed in those cancer patients who have reached an advance stage.

    • The by products of normal metabolism are oxidants that cause aging. Radiations produce mutagens, like hydrogen per oxide and superoxide, are responsible for damaging DNA. Although the DNA repair enzymes constantly repair the damages caused by the oxidants but they do not keep up. With increasing age the number of oxidants increase and there affect on DNA multiplies which result in high rate of cancer and less span of time.
    • Cancer, brain dysfunction, cardiovascular disease and cataracts are degenerative diseases of aging and involve oxidative origin. It is evaluated that the intake of antioxidants like carotenoids, Vitamin E and Vitamin C can play an important role in minimizing the damage but unfortunately the global intake of these antioxidants is inadequate. It is advised that humans must take at least 5 portions of vegetables and fruits per day. In United States only 9 per cent of the total population takes the required amount of antioxidants. Epidemiological studies have shown that most types of cancers are found in those people who eat less than five portions of vegetables and fruits per day. Cancer is usually observed in people who are more than 40 years old so it also an aging phenomenon.
    • Those men who do not consume proper amount of Vitamin C have low level of Vitamin C in their seminal fluid and the DNA in their sperms is damaged by excessive oxidative. Cigarette smoke has high level of oxidants. Male smokers are more vulnerable to develop cancers due to depleted pools of antioxidants. To maintain an equal amount of plasma, smokers must eat three times as much vitamin as a non-smoker eats although facts reveal that smokers eat pathetically. However, male smokers are at risk to have children with by birth disorders and childhood cancer.
    • Smoking, imbalance diet (excessive calories and excessive fat, insufficient intake of fruits and vegetables, calcium and fiber), smoking and chronic infections that may lead to chronic swelling (viruses of hepatitis B and C, schistosomiasis, helicobacter pylori infection, etc.).
    • Mutation increases the chances of developing cancer. Two factors are responsible for mutation: lesions in DNA produced as a result of damage to the DNA and cell division that transforms DNA lesions to mutations. All those factors that can increase either lesions or cell division results in increased mutation which boost up risk factor to get growths or cancer. Cell division is stimulated by the hormones. For example prostate cancer is result of levels of testosterone where breast cancer concludes due to increased estrogen in breast. In 20 per sent of cancer, hormones have been proved to be the risk factor.
    • It would be shocking for a number of people to believe that the intake of chemicals result in cancer because they think they never use one. But the fact is that our food specially vegetables and plants are contaminated with chemicals that are used in fields to ward off the intruders like insects and birds. 99.9 per cent of the chemicals we eat are natural. Approximately, there are more than 10000 natural pesticides in our diet and there amount is quite higher than the amount of synthetic pesticides. Very few of us knew that cooking also gives off chemicals. More than 1000 chemicals are made with a cup of coffee. Our defense system helps in fighting with the chemicals. You must remember that synthetic chemicals are less dangerous than the natural ones. It is possible that the rate of natural chemicals in food is decreased but the process will ask for heavy investment while making the vegetables and fruits expensive to eat.
    • It is also examined that cancer is more prompt to appear in those families who have a history of cancer. If any of your close relative like father, mother, sister or grandparents have it you will may be a victim of the monster.

There are a number of techniques that are used to operate the patient of different types of cancer. Surgery (radical nephrectomy, simple nephrectomy and partial nephrectomy can used to remove the cancerous organ or tumor as per requirement), arterial embolization (used to shrink the size of the tumor before surgery to make the operation easier), radiation therapy (high energy rays to kill the cancerous cells), biological therapy (uses substances that can travel through the blood to all parts of the body to target and affect the cancerous cell while making use of natural immune system) and chemotherapy (it makes use of anticancer drugs that are used by the patient to kill the cancer).

Cancer is curable if and only if it is diagnosed at an early stage. Those who are researching at the topic or suffering from the disease will agree that there are no hard and fast rules for the cancer. It may or may not appear in one person. The best way to deal with the disease is watching one’s self. We must be aware and conscious of any clot or swelling that appears in our body. Women are exclusively suggested to examine themselves at home and regularly at the gynecologist so the minute symptoms of cancer can be caught.
